Plastic injection mold steel in Pakistan: P20, P20-Ni, and 2083 compared

A trade with institutional backing

Pakistan's plastic injection molding sector, and the tool and mold shops in Karachi that serve it, are part of the same industrial base the Karachi Tools, Dies and Moulds Centre was established to support, a Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation subsidiary created after industry studies found the local tool, die, and mould trade lacking the skilled manpower and modern equipment to keep pace with growing automotive and manufacturing demand. Choosing the right mold steel grade for a given job comes down to three questions: section thickness, corrosion resistance requirements, and finish quality.

P20: the default

P20 is pre-hardened, machinable into complex mold geometry, and handles the majority of standard injection mold work. Composition runs 0.28 to 0.40% carbon, 1.40 to 2.00% chromium, and 0.30 to 0.55% molybdenum, enough hardenability for moderate section thicknesses, delivering around 300 Brinell hardness (roughly 30 HRC) as supplied and 965 to 1030 MPa tensile strength. If a job doesn't have an unusual thickness or corrosion requirement, P20 is the starting quote, and because it's supplied pre-hardened, the mold shop can go straight to machining without an in-house heat treatment step.

P20-Ni: for thick sections

When a mold's core section is thick enough that standard P20 won't harden uniformly through it, large plastic molds, die-casting dies, hydroforming tools, P20-Ni (DIN 1.2738) adds 0.90 to 1.20% nickel specifically to improve hardenability through thickness. It's typically supplied already pre-toughened, needing no further heat treatment for most jobs, with a strength around 1080 N/mm² and thermal conductivity of 29.0 W/mK. The tradeoff is cost and lead time over standard P20, worth it specifically when section thickness is the deciding factor, not a default upgrade for every job, since the nickel addition adds real material cost that a thin-section mold doesn't need.

2083: when corrosion resistance and finish quality are the priority

2083 is a different category of decision entirely, a high-chromium stainless mold steel chosen not for hardenability through thickness but for corrosion resistance and mirror-polish capability. Medical device molds and optical component molds are the classic application, relevant to Karachi mold shops serving Sialkot's medical instrument export cluster, where the finished plastic part often needs a surface finish and material purity standard mold steels can't reliably deliver, and where the mold itself needs to resist corrosion from repeated cleaning and the specific plastics being molded.

A simple decision framework

Standard section, general product, no special finish requirement: P20. Thick section, large mold, core hardness matters: P20-Ni. Corrosion resistance or mirror finish required, often medical or optical: 2083. Asking a mold shop these three questions before quoting saves both sides a wrong-grade mistake that's expensive to fix after the mold is already cut, since remachining or replacing a mold body after the fact costs far more than the price difference between grades would have.

What this looks like in practice

A mold shop quoting a straightforward consumer product mold with sections under 150mm rarely needs anything beyond standard P20. A shop building a large automotive component mold with a thick core section is the natural P20-Ni conversation. A shop working with a Sialkot medical device exporter on an injection mold for a plastic instrument housing or component is the clearest 2083 case, corrosion resistance and finish quality aren't optional there, they're part of the regulatory and quality expectations the whole supply chain operates under.
