A different buyer than the general forging trade
Most of the alloy steel demand in Pakistan's industrial sector runs through automotive forging, 4140, 8620, and similar grades feeding gear and shaft manufacturing along Lahore's GT Road and Karachi's SITE and Bin Qasim areas. EN31, also known as 52100 or DIN 100Cr6, serves a related but distinct segment: bearing reconditioning and precision shaft work, done by a narrower set of Karachi and Lahore machine shops that specialize in rolling-contact components rather than general forged parts.
Why bearings need a different steel
A bearing race or roller doesn't fail the way a gear tooth fails, it fails from rolling contact fatigue, microscopic subsurface cracks that develop under millions of repeated load cycles at the contact surface, eventually surfacing as spalling that ends the bearing's service life. Resisting that requires a uniformly hard, very clean microstructure through the whole load-bearing depth of the part, which is what EN31's high carbon content, 0.95 to 1.10%, and chromium addition, 1.30 to 1.60%, are specifically formulated to deliver through conventional through-hardening rather than a surface treatment. Properly heat treated, EN31 reaches 60 to 66 HRC, hard enough to resist the repeated point-contact stress a rolling element bearing experiences over its working life.

60 to 66 HRC for high-carbon chromium bearing steel
Hardness depends on the heat treatment applied. Confirm the condition before specifying.
Where the actual demand is
Industrial machinery running on rolling-element bearings needs replacement or reconditioned bearings eventually, and rather than importing a finished bearing for every size and specification, some Pakistani machine shops manufacture or regrind bearing components, races, rollers, precision pins and bushings, in-house. That's the buyer for EN31: a machine shop doing that kind of precision rework, not a general forging or fabrication shop. These shops tend to work to tighter dimensional tolerances than general fabrication, and they typically know exactly which grade and condition they need by the time they place an order.
Being honest about the research gap
Unlike the tool and die trade around KTDMC or the forging sector under PAAPAM, there isn't a single named industry cluster to point to for EN31 demand in Pakistan the way there is for Sialkot's surgical instruments or Wazirabad's cutlery. This is a real but more diffuse buyer base, worth refining once there's direct conversation with actual EN31 customers rather than treating this as settled the way the cluster-backed grades are, and that's a genuine gap worth closing with more targeted research rather than assumption.
What to ask a potential EN31 customer
Confirm whether they're doing bearing reconditioning, precision shaft manufacture, or general tooling, since EN31 is priced and stocked differently from general forging alloy steel, and the order sizes tend to be smaller and more specification-driven, often a single batch sized to a specific job rather than ongoing stock replenishment the way a forging shop orders 4140.
